Its been a while since we've been in touch which speaks in volume for my riding or the lack there of, somehow I need to get my priorities right between work and cycling……. I guess I will have to give up working!
On the eve of the 22nd May, we took on heavy rains and landslides as we travelled from Kingston to ensure that we would be in the beautiful city of Montego Bay to participate in the Rotary club's 10th Annual Bikeathon.
The great thing about this type of event is the amount of old friends you are reunited with.
Also, the coming together of individuals from diverse backgrounds both local and international, who participated without a single incident.
Hats off to the Rotary Club of Montego Bay East for the magnificent effort in pulling off this important event for such a worthy cause.
Cycling is probably the most trendy and beneficial (health wise) sporting activity that anyone can take part in with absolutely no age restrictions whatsoever and this was quite evident at the Bikeathon.
I strongly recommend that everyone take a mini vacation next year, come on down to the event and discover a whole new lifestyle and approach to the outdoors that cycling brings...right here in Jamaica.
Apart from the late start and a few minor hitches, the kids (who enjoyed themselves tremendously) kicked off the event followed by the Pro/Am competitors and last but not least, the Recreational Category.
The Pro/Am cyclists were awesome and even more fantastic were the the ladies who gave a good account of themselves.
We decided to maintain a low profile and ride in the latter category leaving our superfast road bikes in our hotel rooms and to level the playing field, we rode our Mountain Bikes (right!!!!!)
Nevertheless, we had a very enjoyable day both during and after the race.
However, we didn't perform as well as expected but the overwhelming response to our unique bikes (Cannondale F1000 and The Hummer) by our fellow cyclists was well worth the trip.
A mountain bike category should be in order for next year and to complete the day, a prize for the most unique bike would have been in order.
I cant wait for next year.
